Jerome Hanna "Dizzy" Dean was born in Lucas, Arkansas in 1910. He grew up in poverty and joined the Army at 16. When he left the Army in 1929, he played semi-pro ball in Texas before signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1932. He married Mississippian Patricia Nash in 1931. Dizzy Dean was MVP in 1934 and he won two World Series. After injuries put a stop to his baseball career, he went on to sportscasting. He died in 1974 and is buried in Bond, Mississippi, where he and his wife lived.
