In 1862 the comic actor Jimmy Rogers scored a great success at the Royal Strand Theatre as the eponymous heroine of Miss Eily O’Connor, a burlesque by H.J. Byron of Dion Boucicault’s phenomenally successful 'The Colleen Bawn'. The original play was the first to enjoy a long run of modern proportions and it earned its author a small fortune.
There is a nearly shocking moment, as you look at this photo, when it hits you that it's not modern (by any stretch of the imagination), it is of (photographer) Albert Sands Southworth and was taken in 1848. A time when the last thing most people (today) would imagine a prim and proper Victorian gentleman doing would be to pose for a topless self-portrait. Simply wonderful. #Victorian #man #daguerreotype #vintage #antique #1840s #self_portrait #art
