Alex Townsend was a passionate artist and musician studying graphic design at the Savannah College of Art and Design when he tragically passed away at the age of 21. As a remembrance, the family commissioned me to create a firebowl incorporating Alex’s signature tag. The tag is cut into three sides of the bowl, which sits as the centerpiece of a round stone patio in a memorial garden. One hopes that the firebowl can be a gathering place for friends and family to remember Alex.

This commission came through Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, WI. They had a customer who loved the Waves O’ Fire Sculptural Firebowl, but also really loved the phoenix on the Great Bowl O’ Fire. They wondered if I could make a hybrid of the two designs.

Mark in Watsonville, CA wanted a modified King Isosceles Sculptural Firebowl with a smooth undulating edge and reached out about ordering a custom 41 inch diameter firebowl. Although the design looks very simple, it may have been the most difficult I have ever created. Rounding off the sharp points of a King Isosceles is no big deal, but changing the points and troughs to broad curves is another thing entirely.

The Otomi No. 1 Story Inspired by Otomi textile designs, this one of a kind Sculptural Firebowl features paired ducks and doves cut from curved steel and welded to the bowl as appliqué. Flowers decorate the space between the figures. The figures cast amazing shadows when lit by the sun or by fire. As the flames flicker, enjoy a shadow puppet theatre projected by your firebowl.

When I prepared to make Sculptural Firebowl No. 1800, I decided to reach for the stars. Literally. A 50 carat Campo del Cielo meteorite is the real star of the Field of Heavens Sculptural Firebowl™. Front and center of the bowl, an actual iron-nickel meteorite from outer space is welded into a relief sculpture of a fiery falling star composed of two layers of cut steel. A shooting star within a shooting star!

I had already done a custom firebowl for Graeme Cameron when he was part of Best Made Co., so when he left to form his own venture, Base Camp X, he asked me to do a new design featuring the BCX logo. We called it the Vulcan and you can order it exclusively from Base Camp X.
