Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian The first historical fiction I read which got me hooked. Set during WWII about a German family and how the war tore apart their lives.

The first 15 pages of this book are hard to follow.  But once you accept that this book reads differently than any other book you've ever picked up, you'll fall in love.

The Time Traveler's Wife - do not, I repeat do NOT watch the movie. I loved this book, but the movie was not as good.
