Each year approximately 20,000 foster youth turn 18 and leave the foster care system with no support system; only 25% of these youth report feeling very prepared to be self-sufficient. The National Center for Adoption Law & Policy offers law and social work students unique classes, training programs, hands-on learning, mentoring and leadership opportunities, and out of classroom experiences, preparing these students to become the next generation of advocates for foster youth.
"My journey started when I was born. My birth-parents were both developmentally and cognitively challenged. This Shaka Smart (named after the Basketball Coach.) We fostered him because he was a semi-feral and needed lots of socialization so that he could become an "adoptable" cat. "In 2005, 7-year-old Ricky Holland was murdered by his foster-turned-adoptive parents after a series of mistakes by social workers in Jackson and Ingham counties. Earlier this month, a court-ordered study concluded that state caseworkers did not make face-to-face visits with abused or neglected children and failed to conduct background checks before placing children with relatives."
