His trainer, Paul Hodgkinson, is currently introducing him to a range of experiences that will help him cope with anything he might face in future role. Sharman Birtles JP DL, the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, paid a visit to Greater Manchester Police’s Hough End centre this week to see the work of our  dog and mounted units. She took time out to tour the centre, chat to staff and meet some of the Force’s four-legged staff. www.gmp.police.uk

Regarded as one of our best horses at the time, Fairfax became well known when he was chosen to feature in a Force poster campaign in 2009.  Fairfax has since retired but his image is still in use. A kind-hearted officer helped to bring a smile to the face of a girl who has been through a traumatic year. Last year, 16-year-old Millie Patten was sat in the passenger seat of her grandma, Lynne Cash’s car when it was involved in devastating collision. She came out of it with minor injuries, but sadly her grandma passed away later in hospital. Family liaison officer Sandy Turnbull has been working with Millie since the accident to offer them support at such a difficult time…
