Lt. Guy O. Denton climbing into his P-40 Warhawk in Egypt, 1942. The 57th Fighter Group flew many types of missions: air-to-air combat, strafing, dive-bombing, reconaissance, patrol, and bomber escort. Anti-aircraft artillery was their deadliest foe as such flak accounted for most of their casualties.

Charley Fox was credited with disabling the legendary Field Marshall Erwin Rommel and helping turn the tide against the German war machine. On July 17, 1944, Fox was on reconnaissance and noticed a German staff car racing along a parallel line of trees. Fox descended and disabled it with a well-timed barrage of gunfire. However, it wasn’t until 2004 that Fox was officially credited with incapacitating Rommel (German records confirmed a Spitfire was responsible for the hit).

We're proud of our military history, and these top 10 Canadian war hero stories prove why.
