Self-injury isn’t anything new; it’s been used by clergy in religious rituals and by soldiers seeking to avoid military service for the better part of history. But as Patricia Adler, a professor of sociology at the University of Colorado, and Peter Adler, a professor of sociology at the University of Denver, explain in their new book, “The Tender Cut,” over the last few decades self-injury has changed itself from a psychological disorder to a sociological phenomenon.
According to a report released by the Guttmacher Institute this week, 95 percent of abortions in Latin America are unsafe.
