This is a schematic drawing of Purkinje and granule cells from a pigeon cerebellum done by the famous neuroscientist and Nobel Laureate, Santiago Ramon y Cajal.  His detailed drawings helped provide key evidence toward elements of the neuron doctrine.  The neuron doctrine refers to the concept that individual nerve cells are independent entities, form the basic units of the nervous system and are continuous--not contiguous--with other nerve cells.
