YYC Hot Chocolate Fest: This flavourful festival runs the entire month of February, during which several of the city’s best chocolatiers, coffee shops and restaurants donate the profits from their signature hot chocolates to Meals on Wheels. Forget your basic milk and powdered cocoa concoction, these sweet sippers range from fair trade dark chocolate whipped with cardamom and fresh orange zest at Vie Cafe. You’ll get a chance to vote on which drink will be named Calgary’s Best Hot Chocolate.
Our kids have got energy reserves we can only dream of. Some days, it seems they could run around for hours—hard to do in the middle of winter when the playgrounds are under snow and it’s dark before dinner. Enter the indoor playground, otherwise know as our sanity saver when the kids need to burn off some serious stream.
More than just a bakery, Corbeaux Bakehouse whips up proper meals in addition to stunning desserts, creating everything in-house. This new eatery is all about small-production ancient grains, local ingredients and a fierce emphasis on freshness. Opened by the brothers behind Fratello Coffee Roasters, you know their java is pretty rad, too.
Where to go to see Christmas lights in Calgary: Bonfires, hot chocolate stations and miniature train rides—what’s not to love about this annual event at Nose Creek Pond? Be sure to bring your skates; the pond is spectacular surrounded by the dazzling light displays. While admission to this colourful event is free, there are three brightly colored Toy Soldier Guard Houses around the park to accept donations.
Sun and Salsa Festival - July 20, 2014 - Why We Like It: Spice things up a bit in Kensington—a bag of chips equals money for charity—plus the chance to sample a range of delish salsas. Kids will love some of the wild street performances, as well as some of the activities including mural painting (good to know: dress for the mess!).
Journey to Infinity and Beyond!: We’re often so busy sussing out the exhibits (and the Creative Kids Museum), that we don’t budget time for a Planetarium Show at TELUS Spark. Steer wee ones towards to the infinite universe with a screening of a cool science movie or star show.
