The king of Spain knowing there was already maps showing lands to the west directed his man on the scene, the governor of PR, to take a small fleet & claim the land for Spain, before those pesky Portuguese did. The Portuguese were fishing off the coast of New Foundland. There was no real interest in Spain acquiring the land of FL.
