MASADA, Israel The ancient fortification of Masada in the Judean desert was once the palace of Herod the Great. Today, you can see the remains of the bathhouse, the synagogue, the Northern Palace, the Western Palace, and the Roman siege works. Be sure to visit the Masada Museum near the lower cable car entrance to see artifacts from the archaeological excavations. Insider Tip: Most visitors take the cable cars to reach the top of the plateau. You can also hike to the top in about 45 min.
