The Glass Castle: a Memoir / Jeannette Walls. A stunning and life-affirming memoir about surviving a willfully impoverished, eccentric and severely misguided family. The child of an alcoholic father and an eccentric artist mother discusses her family's nomadic upbringing, during which she and her siblings fended for themselves while their parents outmaneuvered bill collectors and the authorities.
On an icy winter night of 1981 in an isolated house in rural Vermont veteran midwife Sibyl Danforth is forced to make a life-or-death decision that will change her world forever. As with all of the very best novels, Midwives provides no easy answers; rather, it consistently engages, moves, and challenges the grey areas as all gripping thrillers do.
