"Storming of Fort Fisher" (1861 to 1865) Fort Fisher defended the mouth of the Cape Fear River for most of the war. By 1865, it was the only remaining supply line for Gen. Robert E. Lee's troops in Virginia. The Fort was taken by Union troops in 1865, just months before the war ended, and its fall played a part in the Confederate defeat.
