Winslow Homer, 'The Fog Warning' (1885). The fisherman has caught a large halibut, so no problems on that front. The hardest part is getting back to the ship which lies on the horizon. He looks over his shoulder, measuring the distance he must make through the choppy water. A bank of fog creeps ominously in the distance – he is in danger of losing sight of his vessel, and being left afloat in a measureless void.
