FLYING CRAYONS and other adventures in my elementary art room: Masking Tape Resist Trees Third Grade

Third grade classes at Emerson used masking tape to mask out the shapes of trees and liquid watercolor to paint the negative spaces around them. The finished paintings made a colorful display on our hallway bulletin boards.

We used small pieces of paper so everyone could do lots of different versions and see which colour combinations they liked the best. The texture of the oil pastels worked perfectly for this design as the colours blended together so well.

I do a similar lesson where students draw trees in oil pastels ( I show them lots of photos of trees in winter.) Then they use masking tape to cover the tree limbs. They paint with watercolor and the tape acts as a stencil. Lots of learning because students can totally experiment with watercolor without fear of messing up.
