The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus Series by Rick Riordan. While lost and disoriented by amnesia, Percy Jackson discovers the other half of the demigod world, previously unknown to those at Camp Half-Blood.
Truthfully, the book probably isn’t for everyone: it’s graphic and violent. But the characters are so compellingly real and their journey is so honest, they’ll make an indelible impression on you. One of my favourite books.
I think The Twisted Thread desperately wants to be more than the sum of its parts, but at the end of the day it’s only just a pleasant enough beach read. I doubt anyone will be talking about it twenty years from now.
Brothers William and Cal grow up in an idyllic seaside town in Maine in the 1930s. They are as different as night and day: William an energetic dreamer who rushes through life filled with hope and enthusiasm and Cal, the older more pragmatic brother. They are close. Then Dora March comes to town. Another great book by Cook. It gives nothing away to say one brother ends up dead, but the book’s mystery isn’t so much a whodunit as a what are the circumstances surrounding the death.
