This moth is obviously a diehard Redskins fan. GET WITH THE TIMES, little Caloptilia, your team has a horrible name and they got bumped out of the playoffs last week! *rolls eyes*

Happy Arachtober 2nd! Please enjoy this wee, wee, wee baby spider I found nestled in between the window and the window screen last April.

Another gorgeous longhorn - the Round-headed Apple Tree Borer, Saperda candida. This one came to a mercury vapor lamp at Dave Small's Moth Ball last summer. I feel like I should have tried to coax it onto a darker background :-).

Every July I have one or two nights where a very cool black-and-red longhorned beetle appears at the light, only to quickly scurry off as soon as I get near it with the camera. These Saperda species seemingly get spooked just by me looking at them. This time I managed to get a few decent photos but the beetle was in motion as soon as I put the lens in front of it. This is Saperda imitans, a species I first saw in the yard back in 2008, but for some reason I never posted it as a BotD.
