bug of the day | So excited to have finally come across one of these cool red milkweed beetles (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) on the milkweed in my yard. As indicated by the long antennae, this species is in the longhorned beetle family, the Cerambycidae.

A fuzzy little bee on my back porch. So cute! Probably a mining bee, Andrenidae family, based on the wing venation.

A wee water boatman (Corixidae family) that showed up at the moth lights during one of our Nantucket Moth Blitzes last August. Those squares on the sheet are .5 cm on each side. Water boatmen are aquatic but they also do fly, often at night, and they are attracted to light.

A birch dagger moth (Acronicta betulae) that showed up by my porch light late last month. This is a new genus and species for the yard. ID by Hugh McGuinness.

A tiny but colorful plant bug that showed up at the light this past July. No common name, just Orthotylus submarginatus. Perhaps we should call it the Reverse Carrot Bug, because it's orange on top and green on the bottom ;-).

A Two-spotted Grass Bug (Stenotus binotatus) at the black light last June. I tend to be wary of these guys because they bite (well, stab). Pretty neat looking plant bugs though.

A little winter stonefly (Taeniopteryx sp.) I found on the side of my parents' house in Middleborough. Man, my finger looks old and wrinkly.
