Vesta Stoudt, a mother with two sons serving in the Navy, had the original idea for Duck Tape (original nickname) which would create a waterproof seal for ammunition boxes that could be torn by hand. She wrote a letter to FDR in 1943 after failing to convince Gov. inspectors to adapt her solution.
