The Italian Line, Christoforo Columbo.  This is how I sailed to Athens from New York in 1967.  The SS CRISTOFORO COLOMBO was built by ANSALDO SHIPYARDS in Italy, the ship was launched in 1953 and left on her maiden voyage one year later, she was 29.195 GT and had a cruising speed of 23 knots, this fine ship was scrapped in 1982.

The SS France, being too costly to operate, was sold to Norwegian Cruise Lines for conversion to a cruise ship. She served from 1980-2003 as the SS Norway. You may remember in 2003 when her boiler exploded in Miami, killing several crew. Here she is, 47 years after her launch, being scrapped on the beaches of Alang India.

Once the pride of France, the SS France (SS Norway) sits on the beach awaiting its turn at the ship breakers. She was a beautiful vessel as she sailed past the end of our road down Southampton Water.
