Dr Haing Ngor played journalist Dith Pran in The Killing Fields and won a Best Supporting Oscar for his portrayal. He was later killed in a mugging: it's said he refused to surrender a locket holding the photo of his wife, whom the Khmer Rouge had allowed to die in childbirth about 20 years before. He only agreed to the movie role bc he'd promised her he'd keep telling Cambodia's story to the world.
