This is the central octagon of the Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island in NY,1969. Built in 1839 as the first municipal mental hospital in the country it later became infamous after reporter Nellie Bly had herself declared "undoubtedly insane" and was committed. She wrote an expose on the horrible conditions and abuses suffered by the inmates. The octagon was restored in the mid 70s.
