Great Stupa, Sanchi, India ☸ The Buddhist stupa serves as a marker for a sacred space, a symbolic representation of the Buddha’s burial mound. In the most basic sense, a stupa it has 3 fundamental features: a  hemispherical mound (anda), a square railing (harmika), a central pillar supporting a triple-umbrella form (chattra). Around these are an enclosure wall with decorated gateways (toranas) at the cardinal directions and a circular terrace (medhi).
