Victorians often had portraits taken during times of mourning with their faces covered or veiled, or with their backs to the camera. Strange custom...

It was the custom in Victorian times to take mourning portraits, where their faces were not seen. Either they covered them with handkerchiefs or veils, or turned their backs to the camera. Makes no sense to me, either
