Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), born Frankfurt, Germany. From an early age, Maria had a fascination with plants and insects. She was encouraged her to take up drawing, for which she showed great promise. Her exploration of the lifecycle of caterpillars, their transformation into butterflies and the plants they used to feed themselves became the basis for her first two books.
