I did a show on the elements - earth, fire, air and water - a few years ago and this painting did not find a home, so came back to hang in our front entry. It was inspired by the tale of Prometheus, the fabled keeper of the flame and champion of humanity. I am thinking of posting this on Etsy. What do you all think? #IsaCattoStudio #Prometheus #watercolor #watercolorwednesday #art #artist #workonpaper #coloradoartist #colorado UPDATEI decided to go ahead and list "Prometheus" on Etsy…
This painting, #Neriad, was inspired by washed up #seaweed forms on the beach on #CumberlandIsland, GA which is one of my favorite places on Earth. I have just made it into an edition of 10 prints with #JonathanSinger. The prints arrive Friday the 27th and will not be available online until then, but please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in one. #IsaCattoStudio #watercolor #watercolorwednesday #painting #printedition #contemporaryart #art #artist #colorado
This painting is called #Sanctuary — a theme that comes up again and again in my work. The notion of sanctuary is so individual —for me it is a place of #peace, #love and #safety. I find it in the #wilderness, in my #gardens, #reading, #walking, in my immediate family (husband, children and dogs) and always, always in #creativeprocess — #painting and #writing. What is your sanctuary? #IsaCattoStudio #watercolor #contemporaryart #artist #colorado #supporart
The light is shifting in the mountains and the summer is coming to a close. I painted this watercolor years ago, inspired by the seasonal transition. Contemplating bringing it back as a print edition, what do you think?
When the Obamas moved into the White House, I painted this small painting and sent it to #FLOTUS. I had never sent a painting to someone famous out of the blue before, but she was an inspiration and I was excited for a better America. I still think she is a spectacular woman and I have enjoyed watching her voice get even stronger over the years. Looking forward to her next move. And yes, I did get a thank you note!
I love seeing my paintings move out in the world but am not very good about keeping track of their owners. I loved this old one in particular from a series inspired by the Virginia woods from my childhood and wonder where it is now.
This is one of my earliest paintings from 1992 called “Drowning”. When I was young we lived in El Salvador, and my family would go to the beach at #LaLiberatad on the #Pacificcoast on weekends. We were warned of the famed undertow but it seemed like an exaggerated threat until I was swimming in shallow water and yanked from the shore. In an instant the coast was as thin as a spaghetti noodle, and the jungle a tumble of slurred greens. I was probably a quarter mile from safety..cont'd at…
Years ago I was on a #roadtrip in the wee hours through the #TexasPanhandle and I drove through thick swarms of insects — there were so many that I had to use my windshield wipers to see. They created a peculiar #bioluminescent cloud, so I tried to capture that feeling of isolation and #wonder from that experience in this #watercolor. It's called locust storm. isacatto.com ____________________________ #IsaCattoStudio #contemporaryart #watercolors #watercolorpainting
Isa Catto on Instagram: “I painted this piece using #wallpaper designs for inspiration and a knave from a vintage deck of playing cards. I was trying to come to terms with a knave in my own life (not my husband, I should mention, but a swindler)— and this painting helped me exorcise the scoundrel. At least from my own mind. Available for purchase through #HarveyMeadowsGallery ”
This watercolor, Roost, springs from a childhood memory of Guatemalan jungle imagery. Jungle imagery is a bit of a constant in my artistic landscape. What is yours? Tap this photo for more images on Instagram.
It's nine degrees this a.m., but I'm thinking that #spring is around the corner. This #watercolor is a study for a series I did on the myth of Persephone and Demeter. #Persephone was kidnapped by #Hades, the God of the underworld, and subsequently vanished from the earth. Her mother, Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, was wild with grief and neglected her duties, plunging the world into hunger. She roamed the earth searching for her daughter and eventually found her...cont'd at link
