The Rainbabies by Laura Krauss Melmed. I chose this high fantasy story with motifs of magic, heroism, special character types, and fantastic objects. From the themes in story children can learn love, bravery, and that family isn't always dictated by birth. The realistically rendered illustrations mirror the text. I would read this book to 4-5 year old children.

Jim LaMarche wrote and illustrated The Raft. He also illustrated Little Oh and The Rainbabies, both by Laura Krauss Melmed.
