September 26, 1872: The new Social Evils Hospital. The Social Evil Hospital opened on Arsenal. The city had authorized legal, regulated prostitution in an experiment to curb crime and disease, and the Social Evil Hospital was specially created to treat prostitutes. The Social Evils Hospital was torn down in the early 1900s, and its large grounds became Sublette Park.

This Day in St. Louis History: July 31, 1888 St. Louis University moves to Grand Avenue  For St. Louis University moving from its campus at Ninth and Washington was something it had long foreseen. Architect Thomas Waryng Walsh designed both of the school’s new buildings, the English Gothic-style university building (DuBourg Hall) and College Church (St. Francis Xavier). On July 31, 1888, SLU formally opened on the grounds it occupies today.
