The number of moose in the Gopher State has fallen by 52 percent since 2010, for reasons no one can figure out, although the Department of Natural Resources said hunting had nothing to do with it. It cited a variety of possible explanations, including a tick-borne disease and Minnesota's recent unusually hot summers, which moose don't handle well. This is a great topic to have a naturalist come and speak to your residents about.
Split Rock Lighthouse Overlook on Minnesota Hwy 61 (formerly US 61) near Beaver Bay, Minnesota. It was developed by the Minnesota Department of Highways in the early 1950's to provide a location for motorists to pull over view the Split Rock Lighthouse. It was recently very nicely restored after having fallen into very bad disrepair. The highway was also rerouted to isolate the lookout from the highway traffic.
