Dave said. ''I then measured and created everything from there.'' He welded together the frame from two-inch-by-three-inch 0.125-inch-wall rectangular tubing. Up front, he designed a suicide front spring mount with multiple mount points for height adjustment. A Model T front spring mated to a 1934 Ford front axle, 1940 Ford spindles and a complete steering setup from a 1948 Ford bolt to the spring mount. ''The factory, unmodified parts are really the best stuff,'' he said.

''The car weighs 1,825 pounds,'' he noted. ''I can do 60 MPH in low, so this gearing allows me to go through corners without shifting. The three-speed just has this strange rightness.'' Atop the chassis, Dave welded together a body frame of one-inch-square tubing, then covered it in body panels that he hammered out himself over homemade wooden bucks, using dimensions taken from a Model T circle track body.

Dave rebuilt the 350-cu.in. V-8 from the Monte Carlo using ''fuelie'' heads, a camshaft from a 300hp 327 and finned rocker arm covers from a Corvette. ''I built the engine with the goal of longer life rather than for performance,'' Dave said. ''And I used that camshaft because it has a broad enough torque curve for higher gears.'' Though they won't win him any drag races, the Saginaw three-speed manual transmission and the 2.30 gears in the rear axle turned out to be the ideal combination.
