Russia to begin developing prototype Airborne Warning And Control System aircraft based on upgraded Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A (Il-476) airframe,was announced 21 Nov.Plans 1st introduced 2011,1st Il-76MD-90A to be converted to AWACS prototype arrived at Taganrog-based Beriyev Aviation Scientific-Technical Complex same day as announcement.Will be designated A-100 (current Il-76 based AWACS,of which 20 currently in service with Russian Air Force [VVS],designated A-50 'Mainstay').

Moscow, the Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily Rossii / VVS) has taken delivery of its first IL-476 transport aircraft in early December. This delivery follows an agreement signed in 2012 worth € 3.5 billion, covering 39 aircraft. The plane, joined his deployment base in Ivanovo-Severnyy about 200 km northeast of Moscow.
