Jim Mortensen had a plan to beat the high price of oil during the 1974 oil embargo. He’d build an energy efficient underground house. With help from friends and family, Jim Mortensen and his wife Mickey spent about eight years building their underground house moving in in 1983. The stone facade is from rock the couple collected by hand from their land. Jim made the mortar while Mickey laid all the stone.
