The brown kiwi, a flightless New Zealand bird, lays about 100 eggs in a lifetime. Each one grows so large, it barely fits in its mother’s body. She is forced to waddle, and her swelling belly touches the ground. For close to a month, while the egg grows inside her, she eats triple her usual amount of food. The last few days, she eats nothing—she doesn’t have room. The payoff? When her chick hatches, it is almost ready to live on its own.
