ANNIE EGAN was a 27-year-old nurse, caring for the soldiers from the Medic. She contracted influenza, and on 26 Nov 1918, was admitted to the Quarantine Station hospital. By 3 Dec, Annie was dangerously ill. Despite her repeated requests for a Roman Catholic priest to visit her and administer the last rites, the Commonwealth authorities refused to allow a priest in the quarantine area. After her death, there was a public and political outcry.
