It must have resembled Hell, the 8 square miles of volcanic ash and sand, ground that tanks, let alone Marines, had to slog through. Reeking of sulfur and swept by bombs, bullets and shellfire, the beach was bloody of the 26,000 dead soldiers. For the Corp, the Battle of Iwo Jima was the definitive battle in the Pacific. It was the bloodiest battle in history for the Corp. This high cost yielded more than 1/4 of the WW II Medals of Honor awarded to Marines .
