interior of the former monastery of Christ the Holy Saviour in the Chora, which means "in the Fields", in Istanbul. The church is considered to be one of the most beautiful surviving examples of a Byzantine church. In 16th century it was converted in a mosque. Due the prohibition against iconic images, all mosaics and frescoes were covered behind a layer of plaster. The restoration started in 1949, when the building ceased to be a functioning mosque.
