Trenchfoot: Can still be a problem today - When soldiers would stand in water and not dry out their feet they would get this infection called Trench foot. Trench foot was one of the problems faced in the trenches.

Mules along with horses were vital on the Western Front. They had extraordinary stamina even in severe weather conditions. They were often the only means of getting supplies to the front and getting guns and torpedoes moved from place to place through difficult terrain.

Agnes von Kurowsky Stanfieldwas an American nurse who inspired the character "Catherine Barkley" in Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms. One of her patients was the 19-year-old Hemingway, who fell in love with her. By the time of his release and return to the United States, Kurowsky and Hemingway planned to marry within a few months in America. However, in March she wrote that she had become engaged to an Italian officer.
