A fast forward process of making an art journal page, from start to finish. This particular pages theme has been speaking to my heart the past couple months, and I wanted to process through it and express it visually in my journal. I started art journaling summer 2012. "Where there is love, there is no darkness". My art journal spread today was created with a mix of heartache and hope that we can overcome the things I see on the news of all the things going on back in the States. That we can love each other even when it's hard and things are ugly. That we can choose to act in manner that makes us a light in the darkness. On a happier note, we are officially unpacked and (mostly) organized here in our new home in Germany (other than Internet which we will…

More mark-making madness in my Moleskine art journal!   You've gotta know how much I love experimenting with color and layers -- it's like my totally favorite thing. Playing in my Moleskine is a chance for me to play with new color combinations, textures, and marks. And the smaller size (the original size ones) really helps to keep things from getting too scattered or out of control.   Working smaller also gives me the freedom to use gouache since I'm only doing small areas. I just love…

Trying something new often leads me to creating paintings I don't like. But it helps me push myself and my style. The things I am admiring and drawn to are never exactly the same or in the same way as anyone else. By adding my inspirations and admirations to my artwork I can keep making it my own and evolve my style. And, if I get too frustrated, I go back to just what I was having fun with and painting before (whether that was doodling, art journaling, collaging, creating abstracts or…

"When I first started journalling I often ended up with pages that I hated because I had this idea in my head that they had to be artful instead of real. But, let's face it, real is ugly sometimes. I had to learn the hard way that you can't keep that mindset and create authentic journals. You have to let go of the need for a pretty picture and embrace the True because the True is Good. Besides that, you'll never make good art anyway, that isn't also True. Ironically, once I gave myself…
