Designed by Joseph Baerman Strauss and built during the Great Depression, it remains one of the world's great engineering feats connecting San Francisco to Marin Country. Constant exposure to bombing led in February 1942 to their return home via the daring 'channel dash': a great embarrassment to the British at the time, but it removed a strategic threat to the Atlantic convoys.
