King Arthur In Legend and History

Gwynedd (Wales) A large natural stone, apparently split in two, each seemingly bearing half the imprint of a sword within the rock. Cerrig y Cledd means the Stone of the Sword. As of September 2005, the imprint had been recently scoured so as to make it even more distinct. Attributed to Arthurian legend, and may lend reason as to the naming of the stone circle a little to the west, "Cerrig Arthur".

The Lady of the Lake

King Arthur asks the Lady of the Lake for the sword Excalibur, from 'Stories of the Knights of the Round Table' by Henry Gilbert, first edition, 1911 by Walter Crane

Glastonbury has strong connections with the Arthurian legend and the Abbey is said to be the King's   final resting place. In 1191 the Abbey's monks excavated the graveyard south of the Lady Chapel and unearthed a   stone slab, beneath which was a lead cross bearing an inscription in Latin which read, "Here lies buried the renowned King Arthur in the Isle of Avalon". The monks dug deeper and discovered a coffin  inside   which were the remains of a tall man with a damaged skull.
