I’ve seen this captioned as Wichita, Kansas, and I’m positive that is wrong. I live in Wichita! Update: Glad to get the straight skinny on this tornado image. Upper Atmospheric Lightning - It is believed to be electrically induced forms of optical fluorescence. The preferred name is a transient luminous event (TLE), because the various types of electrical-discharge phenomena in the upper atmosphere lack several characteristics of the more familiar tropospheric lightning. TLEs include red sprites, sprite halos, blue jets, gigantic jets, and ELVES.
