These women are twenty-four of first contingents of black nurses assigned to the European Theater of Operations as they landed in England, August 21, 1944. Second row, first on the left, is Arlayne Hall of Los Angeles. Black nurses were not allowed to treat white soldiers and white nurses were not allowed to treat black soldiers. Black nurses had to fight for the right to participate in World War II.
