Ski patrol in Finland. These guys weren’t patrolling the slopes, though, they were preparing for battle. Yep, Finland, the Soviet Union, Norway, and even the US all had troops trained for ski battle. The Soviets learned it from the Finns when, during the Winter War of 1939, they were beaten by ski warfare. The Soviets used the method, most notably during the Battle of Moscow.

Finnish civilians rescue a woman from a bombed building during the first day of Soviet military actions taken against the Finnish capital of the Finnish-Soviet Winter War. The Winter war began with Soviet invasion of Finland on 30 Nov 1939 (3 months after the outbreak of the war in Europe), and ended with the Moscow Peace treaty on 13 Mar 1940. It would soon be followed by the Continuation War between the two nations from 25 June 1941 to 19 Sept 1944. Helsinki, Uusimaa, Finland. 30 Nov 1939.
