The Glagolitic alphabet was invented during the 9th century by the missionaries St Cyril (827-869 AD) and St Methodius (826-885 AD) in order to translate the Bible and other religious works into the language of the Great Moravia region. They probably modelled Glagolitic on a cursive form of the Greek alphabet, and based their translations on a Slavic dialect of the Thessalonika area, which formed the basis of the literary standard known as Old Church Slavonic.
This is an alternative system for writing the Mong/Hmong language, thought to have been invented in the 1950s and based on traditional woven symbols. It is called Paj Ntaub, translating roughly as “flower cloth script”. It's not as well-known as the RPA (Romanized Popular Alphabet) designed in 1953 by Smalley, Bertrais and Barney, or the Pahawh Hmong alphabet invented in 1959 by Mr Soob Lwj Yaj.
Demitra Thomloudis - REMNANTS implements the structural language of the urban built environment. Hand fabricated out of steel, sterling silver and embellished with graphite pencil, my work borrows and deconstructs the organization and materials of constructed spaces. Within these simple forms ornament is described and invented through the simplicity of an edge, a sand paper mark or the junction of the materials themselves.
