Built between 1828 and 1832 by Dr. Alexander Mitchell, Belle Mont is now owned by the Alabama Historical Commission and operated as a house museum. The house’s architecture is significant in that it reflects the influence of Thomas Jefferson. Around the time the house was completed Dr. Mitchell lost his wife and both daughters to a fever. He sold the house but the spirits of his wife and daughters continue to be seen.
