Hiroo Onoda (pictured) died on Thursday at a Tokyo hospital after a brief stay there. Chief government spokesman Yoshihide Suga praised his indomitable spirit.

Olaudah Equiano, contemporary abolitionist leader of William Wilberforce, and former slave, writer, thinker, dreamer

Equiano --A freed African slave who wrote the first known slave narrative. Became a famous proponent of British abolitionism and worked with William Wilberforce. [On a side note, he--as well as Wilberforce--are main characters in movie " Amazing Grace".

German fighter pilot, Franz Stigler, and American bomber pilot, Charlie Brown, who met in the air on December 20, 1943.  The badly damaged B-17 was a straggler, alone when Stigler came upon it in his Messerschmitt.  Instead of shooting it down, Stigler escorted the defenseless bomber past German flak batteries to the North Sea, where he saluted Brown before turning back. Brown managed to nurse the crippled bomber back to safety. They met in 1990 and were friends until both died in 2008. Wow!
