The Shakers professed to want to live a simple life of freedom. Spiritual messages in the 1840s resulted in the Ministry handing down rules to discontinue the use of "stimulants" like coffee and tea. The ban lasted several years, but in 1856 the leaders decided it was all right to drink tea and coffee again. Journal writings from the Union village in Ohio state that members were "somewhat astonished" to again find "green tea for their breakfast, it and coffee."
