About a year ago, we marveled at the unique fungi that Australian photographer Steve Axford captured with his camera. And lucky for us, it looks like the New South Wales resident has discovered even more gorgeous and diverse species to share.
The birdnest fungi 2 by Steve Axford. a tiny cup-shaped fungus containing minute flattened spheres resembling eggs in a bird's nest. It is the reproductive or fruiting body of a remarkable fungus known in scientific circles as Cyathus olla.
Despite their tiny size, many Marasmius species are tough little mushrooms. In dry conditions they simply shrivel up and wait for the next rain. (I recommend watching the british show The Secret Life of Plants to be fascinated by fungi.
