femme-de-lettres: Large (Clark Art Museum) Joseph Mallord William Turner painted What You Will! in 1822. It’s a little unusual, though certainly not unique, in Turner’s oeuvre. A sumptuous landscape surrounds a group of Renaissance actors and their scattered groups of props. Marble sculptures seem to delineate the boundaries of the stage. The title even indicates the play: What You Will, an Elizabethan comedy.
